Well, Chestnuts… it’s that time again! We pay a heavy price to enjoy 3 or 4 months of blissful city Spring & Summer but each year we are reassured that it was totally, completely worth it! As wonderful as urban life can be, this is also the time we like to peek over the city walls for a relaxing weekend away. Like those on the East Coast who flock to the Hamptons or Jersey Shore, Chicago offers a beautiful, nearby getaway for almost any taste!
For the Tree Hugger:
A stone’s throw away, with 15 miles of protected shoreline, and over 70 miles of trails the Indiana Dunes is one of the most picturesque places to pop up your tent. Just one hour South East of Chicago by car or a relaxing ride on the South Shore Line Metra train, this location can’t be beat.
For the Lush:
The Northern Illinois Wine Trail can lead the way to over 20 Wineries in the area. You could choose your favorite and stay the weekend but why not visit them all? 🙂
For the Adrenaline Junkie:
What better way to get your blood pumping and enjoy the beautiful scenery Illinois has to offer than tossing yourself from an airplane? No matter how high your highrise, you can’t beat this view. Check out Skydive Chicago for more information.
For the Young at Heart:
Six Flags is the perfect place to let your inner 8-year-old run wild! If standing in long lines isn’t your thing, try an early season weekday or spring for the fast pass. Be sure to pack a lunch for your car & a cooler of “adult beverages” to enjoy during what will be a much-needed afternoon break. Not only will this save on concessions and pricy Bud Lights, you won’t have to eat that weird cafeteria pizza.
For the Time Travler:
If you’re looking for a more low-key weekend, try antiquing for the weekend in beautiful and quaint Galena, Illinois. With it’s adorable downtown and lakeside location you’ll find plenty to see and do. Be sure to bring back something to make your city place feel like home and check out Galena’s awesome tourism site for lots of good information.
For the Music Lover:
Not so sure you want to leave the city limits? Transport yourself with Millennium Park’s summer concert series. Pack a blanket and a bottle of wine and pretend you’re anywhere but here!
